Construction of ERTMS/GSM-R system infrastructure on railway lines of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. in accordance with NPW ERTMS

As a member of a consortium consisting of Nokia Solution and Networks Sp. z o.o., FONON sp. z o.o., SPC-2 Sp. z o.o., and Herkules Infrastruktura Sp. z o.o., we participate in the construction of ERTMS/GSM-R system infrastructure on 13,800 km of railway lines operated by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A.

The GSM-R project is one of the largest investment undertakings currently being carried out in Poland. Its main goal is to ensure voice communication between employees responsible for railway traffic routes and safety (simultaneous voice communication in both directions and transmission of text messages) and as a result to increase railway safety. The implementation of the ERTMS/GSM-R system infrastructure is the first step in the implementation of ETCS (European Train Control System) and ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System). Upon completion of the investment PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. will be able to manage and operate railway traffic using European standards.

Investment effects:

Substantial improvement in safety

More efficient railway traffic management

Enhanced quality of voice communication

Expansion of fiber optic network

Streamlined operation of railway communication

Interoperable system and facilitated train travel between European Union countries

ERTMS is an integrated railway traffic management system that consists of the ETCS and GSM-R systems

ETCS

ETCS (European Train Control System):

  • Information about the line situation transmitted directly to the train driver’s cab
  • Control of the train driver’s actions and reactions to messages and warnings
  • Analysis of the data collected
GSM-R

GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway):

  • Ensuring voice communication between staff responsible for rail traffic flow and safety
  • Simultaneous reception and transmission (duplex)
  • Transmission of information to locomotives (such as maximum allowed speed on a specific section)
ERTMS

ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System):

  • Increased safety in railway transportation
  • Smoother/uninterrupted railway traffic
  • Reliability of transport services and punctuality
